Enfield’s Denise Payet bagged gold and silver medals at the cadet and junior table tennis national championships.

The top seed and defending champion retained her cadet girls’ singles title, making up for disappointment in the older age group junior event, when she was eliminated in the group stage.

She had to dig in to get the better of second seed Charlotte Bardsley 4-2 (11-6, 3-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8) in a competitive match characterised by some long rallies.

“It’s good to win in my last year of Under-15s; I wanted to get the job done,” said Payet.

“The juniors was tough. I was disappointed because I didn’t show what I can do and I wanted to show everyone – and myself – what I can do in the Cadets. I’m proud that I did.

“We train every day to achieve things like this.”

The silver came in the junior girls’ doubles, when Payet and partner Kate Cheer faced top seeds Tin-Tin Ho and Emily Bolton in the final.

It was a tough task as their opponents were crowned silver medallists at the Italian Youth Open earlier this year.

And it proved to be a one-sided match as Ho & Bolton powered to a 3-0 triumph (11-2, 11-4, 11-6).

Payet said: “It was good. Me and Kate have been playing together for ages and we’re really good friends, so we have a strong bond. We played well but it was a struggle against Tin-Tin and Emily – they were so fast.”

In the mixed doubles, Payet and James Smith were beaten in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Tom Jarvis and Ho.

In the Cadet girls’ doubles, top-seeded Payet and Sophie Barlow were surprisingly beaten in the quarter-finals.
