Enfield Ignatians Under-14s continued their bonanza season by winning the Plate final of the Harrow Tens Tournament after edging to a 33-28 thriller with Ruislip on Sunday.

Recently promoted to Herts-Middlesex Division Three after finishing second in their league, the blue and golds ensured that they made the homeward-bound journey with some silverware following tries from Ben Phillips (two), Akin James, William Wakeford and Feidlhim Ginty.

Ryan Loo added four conversions.

Ignatians breezed their way to the final following a 24-0 romp against Watford after finishing third in Pool A.

Coach Colin Pennicott said: “I’m very pleased and well done to the players for their efforts.

“We travelled to Harrow with a 16-strong squad and the games were fast-paced ones with each game consisting of two halves of nine minutes each.

“I’m also grateful for the support of the parents who really got behind the team.”

In the group stages, Ignatians gave a very good account of themselves against the eventual tournament winners, Welsh outfit Beddau, in which they were outscored three tries to two and lost 21-12.

Back on track following a comprehensive 28-7 win in the first encounter with Ruislip, Ignatians found themselves heading to the Plate competition following a disappointing 26-7 loss to Finchley.

However, this proved to be a blessing in disguise for the team.

Pennicott added: “The games against Beddau and Finchley were eye-openers from our perspective and proved to be something of a microcosm of what we can expect in the future.

“Beddau, for example, were good at disrupting us at the breakdown and they made some good tap-tackles.

“However, all-in-all, it was an enjoyable experience for us.”

Meanwhile, the Enfield Ignatians Under-15s gave a good account of themselves in the 27-15 defeat in a friendly against their Barnet counterparts.

Sam Jones claimed a hat-trick for the blue and golds.
