Enfield Town climbed into the Ryman Premier Division play-off spots after an emphatic 4-0 win at Merstham on Saturday.

The Towners were far too strong for their opponents and the victory moved them up to fifth in the table with two matches remaining.

Although two of the teams below them have games in hand, Bradley Quinton’s side have given themselves a strong chance of extending their season after a run of four consecutive league wins.

The visitors got off to the ideal start when Corey Whitely was fouled just outside the penalty area and he curled the free-kick past goalkeeper Josh Smith for the opening goal.

The hosts’ first opportunity fell to Fabio Saraiva but his free-kick was blocked.

At the other end, the lively Whitely fired wide of the target as the Towners looked to extend their lead.

The chances kept coming for Enfield and Micky Parcell blasted his shot over the crossbar.

Harry Ottaway went close but could only fire wide of the target from close range.

Merstham had a late effort in the opening period but Tom Kavanagh could only send his effort wide of goalkeeper Nathan McDonald’s post.

There was a scare at the start of the second half when Samir Bihmoutine cheaply conceded possession but he recovered strongly to make a challenge preventing a home shot.

Whitely thought he had added a second goal but his effort was ruled out for an infringement.

The home side almost made it 1-1 from a free-kick but McDonald pulled off a vital save.

Enfield extended their lead just before the hour mark when Ottaway’s low cross was turned into his own net by Isaac Nehemie.

The Towners were in control of the game and made it 3-0 when Whitely found space and struck his shot past home goalkeeper Josh Smith.

It was an excellent spell from Quinton’s side and they punished their opponents by quickly adding a fourth goal. Billy Crook set up Ottaway and he tucked the ball into the net.

Merstham almost scored a late consolation through Charlie Penny but his header rebounded off the bar.

The visitors finished the game with ten men after Whitely was taken off as a precaution after picking up a knock.

The Towners’ last home league game is on Saturday when they entertain Needham Market.

Quinton’s side need a win before a tough final fixture at leaders Hampton & Richmond Borough.
