Enfield Town boosted their Ryman Premier Division play-off hopes after a 2-0 home win over Met Police on Saturday.

The victory for Bradley Quinton’s side helped move them up to eighth in the table and just two points off third-placed Tonbridge Angels.

The Towners got off to a fast start in the contest and only a vital tackle from Will Salmon denied Corey Whitely from giving them the lead.

But hosts Enfield did not have to wait long for the breakthrough as they opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

Tyler Campbell sent in a superb delivery from the right hand side and Bobby Devyne sent his powerful header past goalkeeper Craig King.

It was certainly not all one-way traffic though as home shot stopper Nathan McDonald was required to save efforts from both Leon Smith and Joe Turner.

But there was another chance for Quinton’s side to extend their lead before the break through Harry Ottaway but the striker was denied when one-on-one with King.

This meant the sides turned around for the second half with Enfield holding a slender one-goal lead.

The hosts continued to put Met Police under pressure at the start of the second period and King was again impressive as he parried a powerful strike from Ottaway.

This proved even more significant as from the next attack Whitely was fouled in the area by visiting skipper Steve Sutherland.

Ryan Doyle stepped up and struck the penalty with authority past King to give the Towners a comfortable lead.

The visitors almost pulled one back through Andre da Costa but his free-kick landed on the roof of the net.

But Met Police were reduced to ten men shortly afterwards when Rob Bartley was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Ottaway.

Turner almost got on the scoresheet for Met Police but he narrowly missed the target with his strike.

Ottaway also nearly scored a superb solo goal after embarking on a run but he fired his shot just wide of the post.

It did not ultimately matter though with the hosts keeping a clean sheet and picking up a valuable three points after last week’s defeat to previous leaders Dulwich Hamlet.

The Towners face a trip to Hampton & Richmond Borough tonight in the Middlesex County Cup.

Quinton’s side follow this game up with a trip to strugglers VCD Athletic in the league.
