Enfield Town boss Steve Newing acknowledges it is the "same old problems" which extended his side’s winless league run to six games after a 3-1 home defeat against Cray Wanderers.

The Towners have not tasted victory in the Ryman Premier Division since August and currently sit 18th in the table after four straight losses.

Newing’s men have conceded six goals in their last two matches, a 3-2 defeat against East Thurrock was followed by the defeat against Wanderers, and the Enfield boss is adamant his side must cut out the mistakes if they are to get back to winning ways.

He said: "They are the same old problems which we have made a lot of this season. We are making mistakes, either individually or collectively, in our own half of the field and are being punished for them.

"The performances haven’t been bad but in our last two home matches we have picked up no points when we should have had four.

"So we are not playing as badly as the results suggest. We have moved up a level and every level you go up, the more you get punished for your mistakes. But I feel we are playing as well as we did at the beginning of the season, if not better."

Newing insisted he will not let the squad be affected by the poor run of results and stated he won't make changes to his side if a player makes an error.

He continued: "I won’t let the confidence drop. It is not a case that we are nowhere near competing against teams. If that was the situation then it would be a cause for concern. The performances are there and hopefully the results will come.

"But you don’t want to make changes for the sake of making them. The players are playing well but then we press the self-destruct button.

"If a player keeps making mistakes then you will have to look at it. But I don’t want to make a change if a player has just made one mistake."

Enfield take a break from league action as they face Brentwood Town in the Ryman League Cup tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Towners’ boss plans to change the entire side that suffered defeat at the weekend. It is something he has done before in the competition and he feels it is only fair to give different players a chance to claim a place in the side.

"The game gives me a chance to change my entire starting XI from the team that played on Saturday.

"The competition is one that I do want to stay in for as long as possible and every competition that you go into you wanting to win.

"But it does give me a chance to let the players who are not playing every week, and players coming back from injury, to stake a claim for a spot in the first team," Newing explained. "I know some managers do not play the strongest team in the competition because they have other priorities but I do hope they bring a strong side down for the match.

"If I am being honest, then staying in the Ryman Premier Division is then followed by the FA Cup and the FA trophy. They are competitions that can bring money into the club and you never know who you may face in the competition.

"But this competition gives me chance to have a look at the other players and they can remind me why they deserve a place in the side on a Saturday."
