Ellenborough Table Tennis Club’s Jasmine Chan claimed her first title of the 2013/14 season with victory at the Two Star Table Tennis Tournament in St Ives.

Chan made easy work of progressing to the finals of both the Junior and Cadet events, the former including a convincing three sets to nil win over the fast improving Mollie Patterson.

In the final of the Cadet competition, Chan lost a closely fought match against England number 15 Tiana Dennison 11-9, 11-9, 9-11 11-9.

Twelve-year-old Chan gained confidence from the match and started the Junior final against Dennison strongly.

She bossed the first game and claimed an 11-6 win.

Dennison fought back in the second game to win 11-5 and she then went 7-3 ahead in the third game. But Chan showed her resilience and won eight of the next nine points to take the third game 11-8.

The fourth game was closely fought with the lead switching between both players. Dennison opened up a 9-7 lead and it appeared a fifth set was required.

But Chan claimed the next four points to take the game 11-9 and secure the title.

Ellenborough Table Tennis Club spokesman, Roger Close, said: “It is remarkable that Jasmine is winning Under-18 events at ETTA computer ranking tournaments at just 13 years of age. Her improvement is continuous which bodes well for the future.”
