It’s shameless how some people try to re-write history or use selective memory to hide the truth.

It’s time for Conservative councillors in Enfield to stand by the decisions taken on Pinkham Way when they were in power. They have left Enfield with a bad inheritance that we are desperately trying to repair.

By the time Labour came to power in May 2010, the Tories had already let the North London Waste Authority buy the Pinkham Way site from Barnet council. Let’s be clear — that’s the reason why there is a planning application to build a waste facility there.

We share residents’ anxieties regarding the planning application to build a waste facility at Pinkham Way, in neighbouring Haringey, and would like to reassure them that Enfield Council is doing everything it can in response.

We have always fought to save anywhere in Enfield from having to process more waste — hence our consternation at the damage caused when Enfield’s Tories let their Tory friends at Barnet Council off the hook from developing a waste facility at Staples Corner in 2009 — a site that already has permission for waste use.

This means that even as we continue, unlike the Tories, to seek alternatives outside of Enfield, we must try to mitigate the effects on our borough should Haringey agree to Pinkham Way — one example being the electric vehicles that Cllr Sitkin evoked in his March 29 statement and that Cllr Pearce misrepresented in his letter (‘Alternatives should be found’, Enfield Independent, June 22). An apology is expected.

It is laughable for Cllr Pearce to assert that we are confused about policy. Quite the contrary, we have always been very clear that nowhere in or near Enfield should host further waste facilities. Not Pinkham Way, but also not in Enfield, such as the eastern part of the borough, which in recent decades has suffered enough for all of us. Indeed, it is clear that Cllr Pearce and his fellow Tories lack the moral compass to accord Edmonton the consideration they give to affluent Barnet.

The truth of this saga is that the Tories let Pinkham Way happen and joined us in opposing it only once they were turfed out of office. They betray our borough and misrepresent Labour’s position to hide their malice. It is shameful and unworthy politicking.
