The Tour d’Enfield scheme once again raises the eternal subject of cycling safety and how we can improve the situation.
Building cycle highways and improving HGV design are all very well, however, the main reason for cyclist deaths is a lack of training and their frightening tendency to simply ignore the Highway Code. The two most likely go hand-in-hand.
If Mayor Boris Johnson or any other political big-hitters wants to really make a difference to cyclist safety then they should campaign to have something like the old Cycle Proficiency Test scheme made compulsory, preferably from pre-teen age upwards. Most of the dangerous cycling I witness is undoubtedly due to nothing more than ignorance, which could be cured by a measure such as this.
