CUTS to jobs and spending have been announced in £11.2m of savings at Enfield Council.

Councillors are due to agree the fresh round of cuts this evening, from services across the local authority.

A host of back office and management posts are being axed in health, housing, and social care, as well as in customer services and the finance department, with the council saying it has worked hard to protect frontline services.

However, a job is also going at the Formont care centre in Waverley Road, and thousands of pounds of cuts are planned to grass verge cutting, street sweeping the A10, and to the Enfield Arts Support Service.

This round of cuts included £70,000 from the library service, although the council has said there are currently no plans to close any libraries or reduce opening hours.

The money will be saved by not filling vacancies and a slower recruitment rate, with a promise of a “minor” impact on the service.

The raft of savings also includes a five per cent increase in cemetery charges to raise more money to fund the service.

The council has stressed that the cuts come after drastic reductions in funding from central Government last year, when Enfield was faced £69m of savings to find by 2014/15.

The plan, due to be approved this evening by cabinet, will not be the last, and a further round of cuts is due early next year.
