A NEW jobs club was launched last week at an Enfield library that has reopened after a major refurbishment.

Ordnance Road Library will be the home of the group, funded by Jobcentre Plus, which will meet on Mondays and Fridays and offer advice and practical help.

The building opened its doors again earlier this month after a revamp which added self-service facilities, as well as new furniture, and new teenage section and accessibility improvements.

Councillor Bambos Charalambous, cabinet member for leisure, said, “We recognise that the area has been affected by the recession and the library has an important role to play in supporting local people.

“The job club will be offering two hours of free internet use and job-related print outs, a special collection of books on CV writing, interview techniques and business start-ups.”

New Mayor of Enfield Councillor Christiana During formally opened the new section of the building at the launch on Thursday afternoon.

The library appeared to be one of three under the threat of closure after it emerged the borough's finance chief, Councillor Andrew Stafford had been telling residents there were “too many libraries in the borough”, and that some could close later in the year.

But after Ordnance Road's refurbishment, it seems likely that any cutbacks will hit Bullsmoor and Enfield Highway libraries, both in the north-east of the borough.

Councillors need to find savings of £1 million in the library service after government cuts, but say that no decisions have been taken.

The jobs club at Ordnance Road will run every Monday and Friday, between 9.30am and 1pm.
