ANGRY dog lovers are holding a public meeting in Winchmore Hill today in an attempt to find the man responsible for beating a dog to death.

The group will gather outside Capitol House at 10.30am to help "jog people's memories" about the attack.

The beating is believed to have taken place on January 17 when a 21-year-old woman saw a man pulling a dog by its lead down Queen's Avenue at around 6.10pm.

The male black and white spaniel crossbreed was later found dead and battered behind Capitol House, an office block off Green Lanes.

Sally Nicholson-Fisher, 49, from Brighton Road, organised the meeting. She owns four dogs, two of which were rescued after being "very badly abused".

She said: "I was appalled when I heard about what happened. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Winchmore Hill is quite pucker, so you don't expect this sort of thing here.

"We believe strongly that someone must know this person. They are likely to be local. Someone must know someone who used to have a dog and now doesn't.

"We want to really kick this into the public awareness."

Ms Nicholson-Fisher has also set up a Facebook group to advertise the incident called "Can you help identify the Winchmore Hill dog killer?", which has attracted more than 500 members.

Anyone with information about this attack is asked to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
