A school trust has revealed that it has more than 200 children on waiting lists for its five academies.

The Cuckoo Hall Academy Trust, which runs Cuckoo Hall Primary Academy, Woodpecker Primary Academy, Kingfisher Primary Academy and Enfield Heights, all in Enfield, has a 57 per cent over-subscription to its schools.

The trust had a torrid end to 2014 with Cuckoo Hall Academy Trust executive headteacher Patricia Sowter and Cuckoo Hall headteacher Sharon Ahmet both suspended in November 2014 by former chairman of governors Andry Efthymiou.

However, the suspensions were lifted following the outcome of two external investigations and the school is now celebrating the over-demand at its academies.

Heron Hall Academy has the biggest waiting list with 82 children over-subscribed as the 94 places in Year 7 were snapped up.

Cuckoo Hall Academy has filled its 120 Reception places, with 61 children on the waiting list with Woodpecker Academy filling its 60 Reception places, and 38 children on the waiting list.

In addition, Kingfisher Academy has 24 children on the waiting list after 60 reception places were filled, and Enfield Heights, which CHAT took over last summer following a request from the Department for Education, has also filled its 25 places, with one child on the waiting list.

Patricia Sowter CBE, executive headteacher at Cuckoo Hall Primary Academy, told the Enfield Independent: “We are delighted that our schools continue to be as popular as ever. The figures show that the people who matter most to us – local parents and their children – love our schools and the rigorous, high-quality education we deliver.

“We provide all our pupils with the very highest standard of education, and we are looking forward to welcoming our new intakes in September.

“It also shows that it is right for new, high-quality education provision to be set up in areas, even where there is a small surplus, so that parents have the chance to send their children to great local schools.”
