A councillor who has represented Enfield Borough Council for 30 years has been removed from his role as a cabinet member.

Councillor Chris Bond, who was cabinet member for environment for five years, has been dropped from his position following a meeting of Labour members last week (CORR).

The long-standing councillor in Southbury ward was replaced as part of the Labour-controlled council’s reshuffle.

Three new cabinet members are now set to be announced following the resignation last month of Rohini Simbodyal, who was cabinet member for leisure.

Speaking to the Enfield Independent, Cllr Bond revealed he is "disappointed" with the outcome but is "proud" of what he has achieved.

He said: "I guess that is the democratic system that we have to abide by and unfortunately I have been deselected.

"I cannot deny I am very disappointed to have been deselected but I am proud of what I have achieved as a cabinet member during the past five years."

Cllr Bond spoke of his pride at getting more police on the street and helping to reduce crime in the area from the third worst in London.

He added: "We have also had the Cycle Enfield scheme which will be a massive success and aiming to get two green flags for our parks. I will miss seeing these project through but I might be back in the future."

The new cabinet members and their positions will be officially announced at an AGM on Wednesday, May 13.

A Labour group spokesman said: "We have an experienced and talented Cabinet. It’s a team that’s full of innovative ideas and individuals who are focused and passionate about delivering the best services for Enfield people.

"In the last five yeas’ Enfield’s Labour administration has been hampered by a Tory lead government that has cut millions of pounds from Enfield’s budget; money that could have been used to serve Enfield resident.

"Enfield’s new cabinet looks forward to working with an elected Labour government on 7 May that recognises the value of a central and a local government partnership to deliver the services Enfield people deserve."
