A new school and 500 new homes have been included in plans to redevelop Chase Farm Hospital.

The Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital in The Ridgeway, in Enfield, is a step closer to transforming the site after submitting plans to Enfield Borough Council.

The plans would result in the demolition of the current buildings, described as "poor quality" by chief executive David Sloman when the trust took over Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust.

Up to 500 new homes would also be built on “surplus” land at the hospital as the trust looks to raise money for the redevelopment.

A new three-form entry primary school has also been proposed at the south-east of the site to provide much-needed school places in the area.

Land will be made available to Enfield Council to provide temporary school facilities on site which will help to meet current strains.

In a statement from the Royal Free, it reads: “The trust is committed to ensuring that the views of patients, staff and the local community are fully considered as a part of the planning process and has held a series of consultation events to inform the development of the planning application proposals. This engagement will continue as the plans progress.

“Enfield Council will shortly begin a formal public consultation on the proposals and will be writing to local residents and other stakeholders to seek their views.

“A decision on the application is likely to be made in early 2015 and, if approved, the new hospital will open in 2018. The existing hospital will remain open and fully operational during construction. During the building work some services will be relocated within the site.”

The redevelopment is set to cost more than £100 million and the Royal Free has also absorbed the historical £16.9million debts.
