A 16-year-old schoolgirl has represented the UK in an international computer competition in Turkmenistan.

Rabia Gok, a student at Wisdom School in Phillip Lane, West Green, came second in the computer programming category of the 4th International Computer Olympiads.

Rabia, who lives in Bush Hill Park, Enfield, competed against 220 other students from 41 different countries.

The Year 11 student became involved with the competition after being chosen by her school as their representative.

Last week she flew to Turkmenistan with her ICT teacher for the competition at which she received the silver medal for her project, Bookworm.

This is an educational game that she spent three months creating for children, and for people new to learning English.

Rabia said: “I wanted the game to be simple, easy and fun as well as educational.

“I am Turkish and a lot of Turkish people want to learn English but struggle with their accents so I added audio to the game to help with that.”

The student spent a week in Turkmenistan, three days of which were spent at the Computer Olympiads.

On the first day she attended the opening ceremony, on the second she presented her project, and on the third there was a closing ceremony.

As a silver medal winner Rabia was presented with a cheque for $500.

She said: “I had never been to Turkmenistan before but I really liked it there.

“When I got my medal I was ecstatic. I wasn’t expecting to get anything.

“I was so shocked and so happy.”

Rabia’s teacher, Damian Gray, said: “The project was one of the main attractions in the Olympiad and received a lot of visitors.

“This helped Rabia to gain second place in the world. Well done Rabia!”
