An Enfield athlete is on track to win Britain’s first ever Olympic gold in the high jump.

All eyes will be on world number two Robbie Grabarz, 24, who will compete at 7pm in the men’s high jump final after smashing the qualifying round on Monday.

He jumped straight to the top of the qualifying table after he was the only athlete to faultlessly clear all three jumps at 2.21metres, 2.26metres and 2.29metres at the Olympic Stadium, pushing Russia’s Ivan Ukhov to second place.

He will be going for gold tonight in the final, in which he will attempt to jump at least his personal best of 2.36metres. The impressive jump won him second place at the New York Diamond League on June 9 this year.

World number one Jessie Williams, from the United States, qualified in third place yesterday after taking two attempts to clear the 2.29metre bar.

Grabarz’s success has come out of the blue after he lost National Lottery this year due to a string of poor performances.

Only a year ago, the rising star came 23rd at the European Indoor Championships in France and failed to make the final.

Grabarz, who now lives in Cambridgeshire, will now hope to follow in the footsteps of Team GB’s Greg Rutherford who became the first Briton in nearly 50 years to win Olympic gold in the long jump on Saturday night.

After his shining performance on Monday, he took to Twitter, and said: “Qualified in first place. Calm again now before Tuesdays final. Thanks for the support. #TakeTheStage.”

Grabarz, who has a Polish grandfather, trains at Loughborough University once or twice a week.
