The CONTROVERSIAL development of Cat Hill was put under scrutiny at a planning panel last night.

More than 300 people were present at the Gladys Child Theatre, Southgate College, with up to 30 people being turned away due to lack of space.

People living close to the site put their questions to the developer L&Q about the proposed construction of 272 flats and homes on the campus of Middlesex University.

Key issues included the increase in traffic, parking, impact on the character of the area, ecological effect and the impact on schools and health services.

Campaign leader Kim Coleman said: “We want them to know that we don’t want them to build there and show them how many people don’t want this development.”

Chairman of the Panel Councillor Martin Prescott had to call for order on a number of occasions to calm protesters and people present at the meeting.

This was the second attempt to have a public meeting after the first had to be called off due to overcrowding.

The final decision on the development will be made by the Enfield Council planning committee, but no date has been set.

More to follow.
