SIX members of a gang who attacked a jeweller’s with a sledgehammer and an axe before narrowly escaping being trapped have been jailed.

On June 18 this year, the men were thwarted in their attempts to raid V Jewellers in Heddon Court Parade, Cockfosters Road.

At about 4.45pm three motorbikes with both driver and passengers arrived at the shop. All six were wearing dark clothing and crash helmets.

Three of them got off the motorbikes and smashed the front window and door. Staff activated the security doors and a system which flooded the shop with smoke.

The three managed stayed only about 30 seconds, narrowly avoiding being trapped between two sets of shutters, and got back on the motorbikes and left the scene.

One member of staff was taken to hospital and treated for minor shock and later discharged.

A total of nine men were later arrested, seven at a lock up in Ladbroke Road, Enfield and a further two were arrested in a nearby car park.

Nathaniel Hines, 22, of Berkeley Gardens, Enfield was sentenced to four years eight months at Southwark Crown Court today.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery between May 1 and June 19 this year along with the five other men.

The six received a collective total of 22 years seven months imprisonment or youth detention by Southwark Crown Court today.

Another man from Enfield, Matt Williams, 25, of Lincoln Court, will be sentenced tomorrow after pleading guilty to conspiracy to steal.
