A JASMINE tree will be planted in honour of a beloved Burmese peace leader who has been under house arrest since 2002.

The Enfield and Barnet Amnesty International group will meet at Broomfield Park on May 30 at 1.30pm to plant the tree in honour of Aung San Suu Kyi.

In 1990 Ms Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, was elected to the Burmese Parliament. The results were not recognised by the ruling junta and Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest ever since.

In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to bring democracy to Burma.

She now faces trial after the military accused her of breaching the conditions of her detention, though critics say the charges have been fabricated to keep Ms Ms Suu Kyi out of the public eye until after elections take place in 2010.

The ceremony is open to anyone who wants to show their support.
