AN ENFIELD singing star took another step towards stardom in a BBC reality TV show.
Joanna Breheny is part of the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) choir.
And on Saturday night the 22-year-old helped her choir reach the final four of popular programme Last Choir Standing.
Guildford-based ACM Choir impressed the judges with their first song on the live programme, a version of Ben E King’s Stand By Me.
An emotional Sharon D Clarke, star of Holby City, called it “beautiful, passionate and gorgeous”, choral conductor Suzi Digby said she could “feel the electricty” in the studio after the charged performance, and Russell “The Voice” Watson said that ACM must stand for “absolute choral magic”.
And the trio were equally impressed with the 25-strong choir’s second song, Put A Little Love In Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox.
An enthused Digby told them “I didn’t want you to stop, that says it all”, Clarke praised the way they use soloists but still keep a choral sound and Watson said that ACM appeared to be “oozing confidence”.
Despite the judges’ views, it was left to the viewing public to have the final say, and they were suitably impressed enough to vote ACM through to the next round of the competition, along with Men Aloud! and Ysgol Glanaethwy.
The competition’s other gospel choir, Revelation, then won a live sing-off on Sunday to claim the final spot in the last four, with Bath Male Choir being eliminated from the competition.
