‘Gas guzzling’ car drivers face paying higher parking charges in Haringey.

Haringey Council is introducing a tougher emission-based pricing structure for parking permits from late March.

Aiming to make the borough greener the proposed new scheme is an extension of the council’s current emission-based practice.

The new system will use the full Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) banding system.

Further proposals include a six-month resident permit for short term tenants, a simplified range of visitor permits and a rise in the concessionary qualifying age from 60 to 65.

Peter Mitchell, Haringey Council cabinet member for environment, said: “Air quality is a huge issue in London, affecting people’s health and quality of life.

“We are committed to doing all we can to reduce pollution in our borough and that includes being even tougher on heavily polluting vehicles.

“These changes to permit prices, alongside other measures designed to encourage more people to walk and cycle, are a big step towards ensuring a cleaner, greener Haringey.”

Haringey Council aims to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions in the borough by 40 percent by 2020.

Haringey 40:20, meanwhile, brings residents, businesses, social enterprises, charities and community groups together to create a better future for all.

The Council’s transport strategy in the Spring will set out its ten-year-plan to become a cleaner and greener borough.
