Council bosses are playing a waiting game on reducing business rates following the latest government announcement.

Chancellor George Osborne said at the Tory party conference this week that councils will be getting more devolved power which includes setting the bar for business for Enfield traders.

The council will also keep all business rate generated.

However, leader of the council cllr Doug Taylor told the Enfield Independent the local authority would not commit to anything just yet.

He said: “As I understand it this is for 2020 so no immediate consideration. It should remind some of your readers that currently the rate is set by National Government not locally and it will not be moved locally for some time.

“We will be considering the full impact when we see the details.”

At a meeting of traders and the council at the Dugdale Centre this week, Cllr Alan Sitkin, cabinet member for business also took a precautionary stance stating he “needs to see all the details and caveats attached” to the latest announcement.
