The fireworks show at Enfield Town Park could fizzle out for the first time in 40 years.

There will be no sparklers or Catherine wheels at the annual show as Enfield scouts, who are the organisers, claim it is not feasible to host the event.

This is the scouts biggest fundraiser of the year, with the group making on average £10,000 profit.

However, Stephen Way, head of communications for the scouts, has told the Enfield Independent that despite negotiations with the police and Enfield council, they have had to postpone.

He said: “It is bitterly disappointing that we cannot host the fireworks this year. We had negotiations and we reached a point which made it not feasible to run.

“Changes have been made to the park in the past year and at the moment, we are not in a position to go ahead.”

Safety concerns were raised by the police, as well as a fear of violence at the park following an increase in violent crimes over the past year.

Mr Way added: “We believe their concerns are valid.

“Although we have not seen any major incidents in the park, a heightened concern around violence was the police’s main concern.”

The postponement of the volunteer led event is set to have an “adverse” effect on cash flow for the scouts.

He added: “We are very sad to disappoint many people, we have had many messages of support, but our primary concern is with safety.

“It’s a major fundraiser for us and will have an adverse impact. We have a strong and growing membership which will help us raise money.

“We had negotiations but we reached a point where it was go or no-go and we are not able to do it.”

Councillor Joanne Laban, shadow cabinet member for environment, said: "The fireworks in Town Park is not just an annual event but an Enfield institution and it would be devastating if it were axed.

“Generations of families and friends have attended this event for decades. The proceeds from the event goes to the scout movement in Enfield which is a wonderful organisation that teaches young people new skills.

“The scouts have run this event for years with volunteers and should be allowed to continue. Whatever the issue, I believe the authorities need to work with the scouts to make sure the fireworks display is held this year."

An Enfield council spokesperson said: “We understand that the scouts firework display may not go ahead this year due to their financial considerations. The council is working with all partners to see if this situation can be resolved and this much-loved display can go ahead.”
