A huge boost has been given to apprenticeships after the borough received more than £1 million to help improve town centres.

Enfield Town and Ponders End high street are set to benefit from the £1.1m grant from the Greater London Authority, as well as £80,000 from Enfield council, to bring businesses together and create apprenticeships.

The money comes from the new Homes Bonus Funding, and will be ring-fenced and is based on the number of new homes built in each area to develop the infrastructure.

Students will be matched up with courses and people who are struggling to gain employment will be helped into work.

The council has also stated there will be "physical improvements" made to shop fronts and will promote more networking.

Councillor Alan Sitkin, cabinet member for economic regeneration and business development, said: “Enfield council means business. This £1m cash injection is going to be used to create jobs in key industry sectors for Enfield, such as transport, food, logistics and construction, improve our high streets and set up forums where businesses can network.

“Matched with £80,000 of our own money, we will be transforming the high streets, increasing job opportunities and enabling local businesses a place where they can network and share good ideas.

“The future is very exciting for businesses in the borough”
