A re-enactment will be held to mark 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta.

The signing of the historic document will take place at Chase Side Memorial Gardens, in Enfield, on Monday, June 15, with a competition for the best photo, drawing or poetry themed around the Magna Carta.

Saturday, July 11 will see an evening of poetry and music led by local poet John Murray, at Forty Hall, in Forty Hill.

The peace treaty was signing on June 15, 1215, to end the conflict between King John and his barons, who were in revolt. It was signed at Runnymeade in Surrey.

Councillor Achilleas Georgiou, Deputy Leader of Enfield Council said: “The Magna Carta is such an important historical event that at Enfield Council we really want to bring heritage alive for residents. We hope that these exciting events, all based on the signing of the Magna Carta, will do this.

“We especially hope for a good turnout at the re- enactment on the 15 June, and would urge people to get involved with the photo, art and poetry competitions.

“We want everyone to get involved so that older residents and newcomers share common pride in local history.”
