Labour candidate Bambos Charalambous admitted he was “disappointed” but did not rule out taking on David Burrowes again.

The Labour candidate ate into the Conservative's majority of 7,000 from 2010 and reduced it to 4,753 votes.

This was the second time Councillor Charalambos had gone up against Mr Burrowes for the Enfield Southgate MP slot and he told the Enfield Independent his campaign team “worked really hard”.

He said: “I am disappointed but proud of the campaign we ran. We worked really hard and we’ve cut into Burrowes' majority so there is cause for hope.”

The candidate and Labour councillor believes that the national swing towards the Tories also played a big part in Enfield Southgate.

He said: “We will be back. I think the national swing played a factor, it was a tall order to overcome it in one go. Having taken these inroads now and can take that on in five years."

Charalambous refused to rule out going head-to-head with Burrowes for a third time in 2020.
