Winning MP for Enfield Southgate David Burrowes described his victory as "thrilling" ahead of a third spell at Westminster.

The MP’s majority was cut by Bambos Charalambous in the Labour corner to 4,753 but the Conservative candidate held firm.

Mr Burrowes said: "It is thrilling victory overall, to be elected again and serve the area that I love. It is a real privilege and honour to do another five years.

"Fifteen years is a long time, some would say it is a life sentence but not me. I am relishing the challenge, and there is a lot to do."

Labour had been quietly confident of a overturning the majority following a successful local election, which saw them take seats in Winchmore Hill and Southgate Green in 2014.

However, the Conservative MP admitted the resulted acted as "a warning shot" to step up the campaigning.

Mr Burrowes added: "I think last year was a warning shot, it got me on red alert to make sure I was out there doing all I can. I think what was clear across the constituency that more Conservatives came out."

He also revealed he did not know if this was to be his final term. "I am not doing a David Cameron, I will see how I am but for the time being it is full steam ahead," he said.
