Radio 1 DJ Greg James said seeing where the money for his London Marathon endeavours would go to gave him the inspiration he needed to complete the race.

Mr James ran the 26.2 mile route on Sunday in aid of the Lord’s Taverners – the UK's leading youth cricket and disability sports charity - after being inspired by his trip to Enfield.

He took time out of training last week to hand over the keys to a brand new minibus for the Radiomarathon Centre in Turkey Street, Enfield – the charity’s 1,081st minibus.

The DJ raised £15,000 for Radiomarathon, which supports children and adults with learning disabilities and the Lord’s Taverners have now provided two buses to help bring users to the centre.

He said that the chance to see the impact his fundraising had would be at the forefront of his mind when the pain set in.

Mr James said: “Any help that they can get from people running for them is great so it was a no brainer for me to do the marathon for them even though it is very tough.

“Being here and having the chance to see where the money will go and how it can help is a really big inspiration.

“I was thinking about doing the marathon but I didn’t have a charity in mind and then I spoke to the Taverners and it made sense.

“I’m a keen runner but marathons don’t come easy to anyone and you have to train hard. My legs have been aching since Christmas."

He added: “It’s a really brilliant atmosphere down there. It’s like nothing else, and that last straight down the Mall you feel like a proper athlete for about three minutes.

“It makes it all worth it and makes all those horrible runs in January worthwhile and makes sense when you cross that finish line.”
