A man who suffered a heart attack in the London Marathon nine years ago but returned to finish the race on Sunday was among runners raising thousands in the race on Sunday.

Graham Barnett, who had to be resuscitated after having a heart attack at the 20-mile marker in 2006, ran the full distance for Chickenshed theatre, in Cockfosters.

Having no recollection of the race nine years ago, Mr Barnett told the Enfield Independent it was “emotional” going past the 20-mile marker.

He said: “It was a tough race and it could be my last. Seeing the 20-mile marker was certainly emotional but I kept going.

“I have to say a big thank you for everyone that helped me run the marathon in 4 hours 39 minutes. It certainly was not easy.”

Mr Barnett, a postman, is one of the runners who helped raise more than £35,000 for inclusive theatre group Chickenshed.

Nicole Correia, of Winchmore Hill, was running in her first marathon as part of Trent Park running club, who had 26 runners - one for each mile.

Having raised more than £1,200 for St John’s Ambulance, the student said: “St John's Ambulance help out at so many events to ensure our safety, including our cross-country events.

“I couldn't have done it without the support and advice from those at Trent Park Running Club who have turned me from a beginner to a marathon finisher.

“The day is a blur, but it was exciting and so, so inspiring. Well done to all that trained and completed the 26.2 miles - what a journey.”

Susan Jamson, of Chickenshed Theatre said: “We were thrilled to cheer on Graham and our other 25 London Marathon runners on Sunday. We positioned ourselves at the 18.5 mile mark amongst a huge crowd that continued to grow throughout the day.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and it was truly wonderful to watch the commitment and love our runners were showing on this gruelling race. We are incredibly proud of our 2015 Marathon team, who have shown amazing support for our work since day one.”
