The story of a possible poltergeist case that made headlines around the world will be retold in a new drama series in May - but it is not the only ghost to have stalked the streets of the borough.
The Enfield Haunting, to be broadcast on Sky Living on Sunday May 3, stars Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson and Matthew Macfayden and explores the unexplained events in a Brimsdown council house between 1977 and 1980.
That summer, mother-of-four Peggy Hodgson called police to her Green Street home after two of her children claimed furniture was moving on its own. Further manifestations including banging on walls and levitations were witnessed by police and journalists.
Here are some of the stories the Enfield Independent has written about the poltergeist case down the years.
- In August 2010, research in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research concluded noises recorded were unlikely to have been caused by normal human activity.
- An Enfield-based film company announced in March 2011 it was casting for a film based on the events at the Green Street house.
- That year, the paper later recorded that film makers had set a release target for Halloween 2012.
- The poltergeist case made Enfield one of the ten most searched for haunted locations in Microsoft search engine Bing.
- The Green Street poltergeist is not the only ghost to have haunted the borough. The Crown and Horseshoes pub in Horseshoe Lane is also apparently haunted by a “little old lady” who plays with the bell behind the bar.
- There is also the Hop Poles, in Baker Street, Enfield, said to be haunted by a poltergeist named George, a former glass collector killed by a bus.
The Enfield Haunting will be broadcast on Sky Living on Sunday May 3.
