A man has been charged with arson after a fire broke out at a house in Enfield.

Francesco Gargano, of Galley Hill, Waltham Abbey, has also been charged with intent to endanger life after the incident in St Stephens Road, Enfield, on Sunday, March 8.

Police and the London Fire Brigade were called to the scene at 1.19am and found the front door of the property alight.

A 25-year-old man, a 24-year-old woman and two children aged one and five were taken to an east London hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The incident is being treated as arson after an accelerant was found in the house.

Detective Constable Nick Waxham of Enfield police said: "This is a serious incident. Had the occupants not been able to escape it could have resulted in serious injuries or even loss of a life."
