A former contestant on the Great British Bake Off is hoping to offer something unique after opening a new cafe in Enfield.

Urvashi Roe, who competed on the second series of the BBC programme in 2011, has opened her own cafe joined to Enfield Town Library, in Church Street, three weeks ago.

The former head of recruitment in the City decided on a career change following the bake-off programme and told the Enfield Independent she is hoping to offer something chains do not.

She said: “I think it’s really important that we can offer something completely different to what is on the high street.

“Sourcing products locally is something everyone enjoys and it makes you feel good when you buy from someone independent. You feel you are helping people in Enfield.”

Mrs Roe has lived in the borough for 17 years and sources food from Enfield Veg Co at Forty Hall Farm, Wildes Cheese in Tottenham, and Holtwhites bakery in Chase Side, Enfield, and is hoping to teach people about food as well as serving local produce.

She said: “People can come here and get something they cannot get anywhere else in the borough.

“We are also hoping to have taste testers as well and being situated by the green will be great for the summer months.

“The library is providing literary inspiration and I am enjoying meeting people and finding out about their favourite foods as I develop my menu.”

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for education, children’s services and protection, added: “We are delighted to welcome Urvashi and her unique baking and passion for quality food. This is bound to be popular with all library visitors.”
