An Enfield art group scooped first prize when it represented the borough at the New Year's Day parade.

Art Start, based in Montague Road, in Edmonton, was selected by Enfield Borough Council to take on the London on the Move theme at the parade in London and collected the £7,500 winning prize.

The group of 35, all from Enfield, performed their Under Your Steam creation, paying homage to the factories in the borough.

Points were awarded for interpretation of the theme, style and presentation.

Debbie Dean, of Art Start, said the group was inspired by the 'steampunk' movement, which celebrates industrial heritage in art and fashion.

She said: “We put in a huge amount of effort and practised over the Christmas period to make sure we had it right.

“We wanted to represent the industrial success of Enfield throughout the years. We had already performed a piece at the Enfield Christmas Parade.”

Ms Dean revealed that the cast watched on social media site Facebook as the results came in.

She said: “The results came in by the time we had got home and we watched them announce each borough. We never thought we would win but it was fantastic to do so.”

The money will go towards the Mayor of Enfield’s chosen charity.
