Sixth formers emerged triumphant in a London-wide legal skills competition.

The girls from Enfield County School, in Holly Walk, Enfield beat schools across the capital as part of the contest at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The team of 15 girls had to learn two cases, taking on the roles of lawyers, witnesses, magistrates and court staff, before presenting cases to judges.

Edda Vallen, who took the role of prosecutor, said: “Some of us had done the magistrates competition in Year 9 and we wanted to see if we could make something of it this year.

“There is a quite a lot of improvisation and it is really good for confidence and public speaking. To have that confidence to stand up in front of the court is important.”

The side admitted they were “really nervous” as they headed to the crown court with other schools dressing for the occasion in robes and wigs.

Kayleigh Maile, 18, said: “We had to make sure we knew the technicalities. We had to stick the statements which was pretty tough when you knew each other's cases.

The pupils' head of year Ruth Goulding told the Enfield Independent she was “very proud” of the team and added: “This is the best year we have had, the girls have worked very hard together and they deserve to be successful.”

The school has competed in the competition during the past four years and is first from the school to win the London heats.

The side will now travel to Edinburgh in March to take on the countries best in the hope of becoming the first London school to win.

Ms Maile added: “We have written to Boris Johnson and we hope we can help fund our trip to Scotland and get behind the school.”

The winning pupils included: Kayleigh Maile, Ruby Kiwinda, Kenra Dogan, Edda Vallen, Sema Mehmed, Evangiline Agyman, Stephanie Pylarinos, Claire Kenny, Anniesah Sweeney, Kayleigh Cunoosamy, Ciara Murphy, Tara Teymoorizadeh, Isabel Coonjay, Stefani Castiglione, Eloise Lake.
