A star pupil was presented with an achievement award at the House of Commons.

Omalola Olufemi, formerly of Enfield County School, in Enfield, was reward for her A* and two As in sociology, English literature and history with the most outstanding award at the London schools and the Black Child Academic Achievement awards.

Among many other activities in between her studies she fulfilled her responsibilities as head girl, led the school’s model UN delegation, produced a wide range of assemblies on such things as LGBT rights, and won a grant to run projects for younger girls to challenge stereotypes and raise their self-esteem.

She has now begun a degree in English literature at Cambridge University.

Host of the event at the commons was Diane Abbott MP and she said: “Another year, another opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of London’s young black students. Quite how they manage to fit in everything else whilst studying to achieve these fantastic results never ceases to amaze me.

“Tonight goes to show that despite the challenges of negative stereotypes facing them, these young black students are among the highest achievers in the country.”
