A road that has become a drag strip for speed junkies could have average speed cameras installed.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said he is “very concerned” by reports that drivers have been using the A10 in Enfield as a drag strip, causing misery to people living on the road.

Mr Johnson has announced that four sets of average speed cameras will be trialled on the A40, the A316, the A20 and the western part of the A406 later this year.

Results from the cameras could result in them being placed on the A10.

The Mayor of London said: “I am very concerned that residents are suffering from this type of behaviour and want to send a clear message that speeding and racing is not welcome in Enfield.

“I’ve met with Nick De Bois recently, and he and local councillors have been telling me that speeding cars along the A10 are causing misery for local residents on a Sunday evening. In response, I’ve asked TfL and the MPS to fund regular enforcement operations along the A10."

Mr De Bois, Conservative MP for Enfield North, added: “These average speed cameras are an important device to help deal with these night time drag racers on a permanent basis.

“I am grateful for the mayor's support but we must keep the campaign going until we are sure this problem is dealt with once and for all.”

Police have issued more than 20 speeding tickets in the last two months and made several arrests.

Nick Dines, Conservative councillor for Chase Ward, said: “I was lying in bed Sunday about half a mile from the A10 and could hear the sound of these spec’d up cars.

“The noise levels for those living so close to the A10 must be intolerable. I am glad the mayor is supporting our call for more enforcement and it will be interesting to see the outcome of these average speed camera trials.”
