The country's first anti-spitting by-law has come into force in Enfield.

Serial spitters caught by litter patrols can now be fined up to £500 if found guilty.

The Enfield Over 50s Forum campaigned in recent years to stop people spitting in the borough's streets and collected 4,800 signatures for its petition.

The by-law was given approval by the Government in July this year.
