A boy with learning difficulties took to the skies during charity day.

Three-year-old Caleb Regisford, from Turkey Street, Enfield, took part with his friends from the Speech, Language and Hearing Centre at Christopher Place in Kings Cross in a scheme run by Fly-2-Help.

The charity organises events where groups of people can share the experience of being in an aircraft.

Caleb's 30-year-old mother Lauren was delighted to see the children enjoy such a pulsating day at Elstree Aerodrome on Friday.

She said: “He started off a bit miserable but when he put the high-visibility jacket on, he was great.

“It’s so important that they get these different experiences and for Christopher Place to be given the chance is brilliant.”

Air Smiles days create joy, fun and laughter and offer respite and escapism for those experiencing difficult situations such as illness, disability, bereavement or isolation.

Zoe Holland, who sees Caleb on Thursdays and Fridays at Christopher Place, said: “I had the pleasure of flying with Caleb. He loved wearing the big headphones and even fell asleep for the last ten minutes.”

Christopher Place work tirelessly for babies and children under five who have hearing impairment, delay in speech, language and communication.

Fly-2-Help organiser Marcia Mercier is looking to run four Air Smiles events at Elstree per year, with the next flying day scheduled for May 2014.

She said: “It’s been fantastic; our mission is to give children with these hardships a great day out. “We are very fortunate that the airfield really gets behind us and gives up their time.”

Fly-2-Help also have a team of volunteer pilots who take the children flying around the local area.

They are currently considering nominations for the next Air Smiles day and anybody wanting to nominate a family, individual or group, or find out more about the scheme, can do so at www.fly2help.org
