Biography

MP Since - 1997 Majority - 1,920 Born - 08/09/1955. Married 1 son, 1 daughter (previous marriage), 1 stepson, 1 stepdaughter.

Education - St Joseph's Secondary School; Notre Dame High School; City of Liverpool College; South Bank Polytechnic.

Previous Occupation - Oral history interviewer, Imperial War Museum, London (1985-90).

Personal Overview - Has a background in Teaching (another Labour recruit from the chalkface) and in Research. She has some Local Government leadership experience in her Local Council. Her previous group memberships indicate an Environmental interest. A supporter of the London Assembly her early musings on renationalisation of public utilities have fallen into abeyance, as the loyalist tendency overrides such un-New Labour notions. Gained a PPS posting in her first parliament, and the title 'Junket Joan' for her presence on overseas trips (notably Cyprus where she supports the Greek position - along with a sizeable element of her constituency electorate). She has also seen stints as a Government Whip and most recently as a junior Government Minister. Unlike neighbouring Southgate (famed for its 1997 rejection of Michael Portillo), Enfield North showed a revived Tory challenge in 2001 and remained marginal in 2005, and now represents a major Conservative target in the capital. Was removed from her post in September 2008 after publicly calling for a party leadership contest.

Political History - Councillor, Barnet Borough Council (1990-98), Deputy Council Leader (1994-98). MP Enfield North (1997-). PPS to Rt. Hon Andrew Smith MP Minister of State, Department of Education & Employment (1998-99), Chief Secretary to the Treasury (1999-2002). Member of the Selection Select Committee (2001-06). Assistant Government Whip (2002-03), Government Whip (2003-06), Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home Office (2006-07). Special Representative to Cyprus and Vice Chair of the Labour Party (2007-08).

Characteristics - Member of the Labour Women's Network, Greenpeace, and SERA.
