A grime artist from Tottenham will find out next week if he has won two prestigious MOBO awards.

Skepta, real name Joseph Junior Adenuga, has been nominated for Best Video and Best Grime Act and is due to attend the star-studded ceremony at the SSE Arena in Wembley on October 22 when the winners will be revealed.

His single That’s Not Me features the lyrics “I’m looking for a girl with the X Factor but I don’t judge like Simon does”, and it shows Skepta rapping at a pair of decks with collaborator JME, laid over images of him out on the streets. It peaked at No. 7 in the UK Dance charts and 21 on the Official Charts Singles.

The MC was originally part of the Tottenham-based Meridian Crew, but has gone on to release two solo albums, 2007’s wittily titled Greatest Hits and 2008’s Microphone Champion.

He is due to release his next album Konnichiwa later this year and Professor Green recently named Skepta’s track It Ain’t Safe as his song of the year.

“People are now realising that there’s success to be had in music,” says Joseph. “Back in the day, the only path out was football. It’s good to show the youth that there’s another path.”

He is up against FKA Twigs, Rudimental and Scorcher in Best Video category.

Skepta will also be battling it out at the Red Bull Culture Clash, as part of crew Boy Better Know, at Earl’s Court on November 20. Details: eco.co.uk, cultureclash.redbull.co.uk
