The fight over Tottenham Hotspurs' plans to build a training academy in the borough is set to flare up again after the club has launched an appeal to overturn Enfield Council's decision to disallow the scheme.

The application to build a training academy was quashed by Enfield Council's planning committee by a vote of 11 to three in September last year.

The plans include a three-storey building with accompanying car parking facilities on part of the borough's Green Belt in Bulls Cross.

However, planning officers had recommended the plans be approved.

The appeal is now in the hands of the Planning Inspectorate and will be subject to a public inquiry.

A number of residents are vehemently opposed to the academy, which would be located in land near the historic Myddleton House.

They are now gearing up for round two of the fight to keep the 57-acres of protected land out of the football giant's hands.

Campaigner Jose O'Ware, of Great Cambridge Road, Enfield, said: "I would hope that, with the size of the vote before, t the council will use every means possible to fight against this again.

"This is a private company which wants the land for private use. It will not benefit Enfield in any way."

Lifelong Spurs supporter Tony Claydon of St Luke's Avenue, Enfield, is also opposed to the plans. He said: "I am disappointed, but not surprised, that despite such an overwhelming cross-party vote against the planning application last September and the opposition by local amenity groups, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club should pursue its application."

As part of their previous application, Spurs had offered a package of benefits including revamping Queen Elizabeth Sports Stadium in Donkey Lane and putting £2 million into a community football programme for youngsters.

A spokesperson for Spurs said the incentives were key' to the application and would be honoured if the Government planning inspector ruled in favour of the club which already has a small training facility on the land.
