Jobi McAnuff says he has no intentions of hanging up his boots just yet after the influential Leyton Orient skipper scored a brace in Saturday’s crucial 3-0 win over Harrogate Town.

Those goals, alongside McAnuff’s strike against Dover Athletic on Bank Holiday Monday, now mean that the 36-year-old has scored in every season during his 18-year career in the game.

Since returning to the Breyer Group Stadium from Stevenage for his second spell with the club in 2017, McAnuff has proven himself to be one of the O’s most consistent performers, playing influential roles in Orient’s wins over Barnet and Boreham Wood as well as their opening day draw with Salford City this campaign.

Head coach Justin Edinburgh praised the midfielder’s professionalism following Saturday’s win over Harrogate and McAnuff says he is still enjoying his football, despite being in the latter stages of his career.

Speaking to Leyton Orient’s website, McAnuff said: “I’ve had a really good run and am still enjoying my football. I’m lucky to be playing and that’s something that doesn’t get away from me. Being around the lads on a day to day basis and being at a fantastic club, I want to keep enjoying it for as long as I can.

“As long as I can keep contributing and being a part of the group, then I’ll keep going. I’ve got all the young lads to keep me going and we’ve got a real good blend at the moment. I’m happy to be a part of it and to be a part of a winning team.”

McAnuff’s goals against Harrogate extended Orient’s unbeaten start to the campaign to 12 games and Saturday’s result means the O’s now lead the National League for the first time this season.

The team spirit among the East London side’s squad, coupled with the atmosphere in the stands, means that there is a real feel good factor developing at Brisbane Road under Edinburgh’s stewardship.

But despite Orient’s strong start to the season, McAnuff says he is keen to keep his feet grounded and believes the team need to continue their consistent start to the campaign if they want to be challenging at the right end of the table come April.

He said: “A few games ago, it was us and Harrogate left and Dean Brill made a point of saying we want to be the last unbeaten team. It was a real target for us and coming here today, we wanted to make sure we came off being the only unbeaten team in the league.

“It’s a great start and I’m very pleased with what we’ve done. But it is just a start at the moment and there’s a lot of football to go. We’re in a good place but we just need to keep it going and keep the consistency up.”

“It was a tough first half – really bitty and there were a lot of stoppages in play. But that first goal really settled us down. It was a really good goal, really well worked and we were playing out under pressure. We got the second one and they had a bit of a go at it in the second half, but it was fairly comfortable in the end.

“We had to deal with a lot of balls into the box and the defenders stood strong. Dean Brill made some great saves. All-round, it was another top performance.”
