Enfield Town boss Steve Newing acknowledged his side were the "architects of their own downfall" after being beaten 2-0 against Margate.

First half goals from Carl Rook and Tommy Murphy settled the contest for the Gate, who currently occupy top spot in the early Ryman Premier Division table.

The Enfield boss admitted his side struggled to create chances throughout the contest and conceded Margate were worthy winners.

He said: "They are a good side with some very good players and their aim this season is to get into the play-offs if not win the division. With the squad they have assembled I think they deserve to win it.

"But we were the architects of our own downfall though. We gave away possession twice in our on half and were punished for it.

"We improved in the second half and had more possession but to beat teams like Margate we need to be at the top of our game.

"We didn’t test their goalkeeper really throughout the 90 minutes so they deserved to win the match."

The Towners currently sit 13th in the fledgling table but after an encouraging start to the season are without a win in the league for four games.

However, Newing insists he is pleased with his side’s start to the campaign.

"We are only six games into the season and we have had a difficult start. We have already played the top two sides but we have seven points which is good," he explained. "So if you take seven points from every six matches you play in this division then you would be pretty disappointed if you ended up being relegated.

"There will be times this season when you don’t win for a few games but that happens and that is what it is like at this level of football.

"It is not like the Ryman North where you can win games even if you don’t perform at your best.

"In this league you have to be at your best every game just to be in with a chance of getting a victory."

Enfield take a two week break from league action as they compete in the FA Cup and then the FA Trophy.

The Towners welcome Bishops Stortford to the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The Bishops currently ply their trade in the Blue Square Bet North and have suffered mixed results in the league with seven points from their opening seven matches. Enfield defeated St Margaretsbury 2-0 to reach this stage of the competition while it will be Rod Stringer's side's first appearance in the Cup this season While the Enfield Town boss stated he will be treating the match like it like any other game, he believes his side will have to be at their best if they are to progress into the next round of the competition.

He said: "It is an old football cliché but we have to take every game as it comes.

"Of course it will be a tough game for us. In their last match they defeated the side who were second in the table away from home.

"We will have to be at our very best if we are to get anything from the game.

"Hopefully we can get a good crowd in on Saturday. I know that due to Bishops Stortford being placed in the Northern division that their fans have to make a lot of long journeys.

"This game isn’t too far for them so hopefully we will have a good crowd which will help the club."
