ENFIELD’s Siobhan O’Neill took bronze at the 2010 British Open Championships at the K2 leisure centre on Sunday.

The 24-year-old, a long-time member of Enfield Judo Club, finished third in the under 52kg category.

O’Neill, who now trains and studies at Bath University, beat Spain’s Helena Gil Moreno and 2009 GB World Cup gold medallist Kimberley Renicks of Britain.

The British fighter lost out to Miriam Polak of the Netherlands by ippon in the semi-final, which saw her enter the repechage system and fight for the bronze medal. O’Neill required just 15 seconds to secure a place on the podium, stunning the talented Miranda Wolfslag of the Netherlands by registering an ippon throw.

“I am really pleased with my bronze medal, my first at these Championships," she said.

“It is a big accomplishment and I was surprised, but I’m pleased I won it so quickly by ippon.”
