Martin Atkinson has been named as the referee for Watford’s trip to Manchester United on Sunday, as the they resume their fight to retain their Premier League status.

Atkinson was last in charge of a game involving the Hornets at Villa Park when Aston Villa stole the points late on through a deflected Tyrone Mings goal, despite Troy Deeney opening the scoring in the first-half.

Mings could have received a second yellow card for a handball earlier in the game, but Atkinson chose not send him off.

Last season, Atkinson oversaw two Watford games, including the 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage and the 2-1 Boxing Day defeat to Chelsea.

The last time the Hornets won a game with Atkinson in charge was back in September 2016, when they beat West Ham United 4-2 away from home.

Lee Betts and Peter Kirkup will be the referee’s assistants at Old Trafford, while Anthony Taylor will be the fourth official.

On Video Assistant Referee duties will be Andre Marriner, assisted by Scott Ledger.
