A stunning Billy Bricknell goal ensured a historic occasion was celebrated with three points as Enfield Tow won 3-2 at Cheshunt in their 1,000th game on Saturday.

The A10 derby got off to a flying start as Bricknell gave the Towners a very early lead, only for their hosts to get back on terms in the seventh minute.

A Sam Youngs goal re-established the advantage midway through the first half for Andy Leese’s side, but once again Cheshunt were to get back on terms to leave an absorbing contest all-square at the break.

However, it was Bricknell who was to net the winner after the restart by producing a magical moment worthy of sealing the landmark occasion in Enfield’s favour.

Fans were still making their way from the bar when the Town striker gave his side the lead, tapping home after a Youngs shot had deflected kindly to him.

The advantage was to prove shortlived though, as Zack Newton latched onto a cleared corner and attacked down the left before driving a dangerous ball across the six-yard box which was turned in by Mo Camara.

The blistering opening to the contest set the tone for a match that saw plenty of goalmouth action, although the Town strikers initially found it hard going against a well-organised Ambers backline.

Despite this, Enfield went back in front after 22 minutes when Youngs’ inswinging delivery from a corner evaded everyone and found its way into the top corner.

Youngs then fired a 30-yard effort into the side netting before Cheshunt equalised for a second time in the 34th minute when Ryan Moss volleyed home from close range after Camara had headed a Tanasheh Abrahams cross back into the danger zone.

The visitors started the second half positively and Lyle Della-Verde sent a free-kick narrowly wide before an even better opportunity came and went.

Ryan Blackman switched play to new signing Josh Urquhart, whose deep defence-splitting ball picked out Youngs in plenty of space and through one-on-one but he was denied by keeper Harry Girling.

The visitors didn’t have long to wait to go back in front though, and it was a moment to savour.

Urquhart lofted a cross in from the right and Bricknell chested the ball up 12 yards out before producing a superb scissor kick to send the ball into the bottom corner.

Town kept the pressure up but they were unable to create any further opportunities of note as they safely saw out the remainder of the contest to leave them seventh in the Isthmian Premier Division table.
