Enfield Town bowed out of the FA Trophy at the first round stage after a 2-0 home defeat to National League side Ebbsfleet United.

Alex Reid put the visitors in front after one minute and Gozie Ugwu added a second.

Billy Bricknell had the chance to pull one back from the penalty spot, but his effort was kept out by Jordan Holmes.

Town will have been confident of causing a cup upset prior to kick off but any hope of that was given a serious blow after just 53 seconds.

Tomi Adeloye got past Sam Hatton too easily and delivered an excellent ball to the far post where Reid was waiting to tap past Nathan McDonald.

Town sat back and soaked up the pressure in the opening 10 minutes as they looked to realign themselves in the game.

Ebbsfleet controlled possession, showing the National League class that was expected of them with some slick passing moves and excellent ball control.

Enfield began to get more adventurous as the half wore on and it was Jamie Grimes who had the first chance for an equaliser, but he blazed over the bar after the ball had been cut back to him by Muhammadu Faal.

The visitors continued to dominate possession as the game approached the half-hour mark and it paid dividends. Josh Payne delivered a free-kick into the area which found Ugwu, and with his back to goal, he spun and fired a half-volley past McDonald to double Ebbsfleet’s lead.

Just five minutes later, Town were handed the chance to get themselves back in the contest when Marc Weatherstone was pushed to the floor by Tyler Cordner at a set-piece, but Holmes guessed correctly to deny Bricknell from the spot.

Similarly to how the first half started, Ebbsfleet came out for the second period and took control of possession, forcing Enfield to retreat into their own half.

This time, though, Town got through the pressure without conceding and began to regain some possession after the hour had passed.

Hatton proceeded to find Faal with an excellent through ball leaving him one-on-one with Holmes, but the visiting keeper did well to smother the effort and keep his clean sheet intact.

Bricknell came close to halving the deficit when a poor Holmes clearance fell for him, but his lobbed effort from 40 yards clipped the crossbar, leaving the score 2-0 to the visitors at the final whistle.

Next up for Town is a return to Isthmian League Premier Division action tomorrow night as they travel to Worthing, kicking off at 7.45pm.
