Over 260 athletes with intellectual disabilities are due to take part in the Special Olympics Greater London Regional Indoor Athletics competition at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Sunday, November 3.

Special Olympics Great Britain (GB) is a non-profit organisation and the largest provider of year-round sports coaching and athletic competition in summer and winter sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

They currently have more than 120 all ability, inclusive sports competitions covering 28 sports across England, Scotland and Wales, providing approximately 27,000 regular hour-long sporting sessions per year, all delivered by a team of more than 3,700 dedicated volunteers.

This indoor full-day event marks the final athletics regional competition in the Special Olympics GB 2019 calendar and is a highlight of the Special Olympics GB sporting year, attracting athletes from as far away as Gateshead in the North and Carmarthen in Wales.

Lee Valley Athletics Centre will provide the athletes a venue to compete in a mix of track and field events, all supported by Amateur Athletic Association officials - some of who have officiated at Olympic and World events - corporate supporters and local voluntary police cadets.

Peter Palmer, Special Olympics Greater London coach and event organiser said: “As with all Special Olympic competitions, the event not only offers athletes the opportunity to take part in competitive sport, it also offers our athletes a chance to succeed, show their capabilities, make family and friends proud and socialise with the Special Olympic GB community.”
