Enfield Town came out on the right end of an eight-goal thriller away at Cray Wanderers, winning 5-3 in their Isthmian League Premier Division encounter.

Muhammadu Faal and Ken Charles each scored a brace for the visitors, while Joe Payne’s deflected effort added a fifth before two late Cray goals set the nerves jangling.

It couldn’t have been a better start for the visitors as, with barely a minute on the clock, Payne floated a free-kick into the Cray box that wasn’t dealt with, and Faal poked out a leg to divert the ball over the line.

Town failed to keep their concentration though and were pegged back shortly after when Joe Taylor was allowed to advance into the box from the left, and he beat Nathan McDonald at his near post.

Faal restored the visitors’ lead five minutes before half-time, chasing a through ball down the middle and beating the Cray goalkeeper with an excellent finish.

Town went straight on the offensive upon the restart and Charles grabbed the first of his pair in the 51st minute by burying Sam Hatton’s knock-down.

He swiftly had his second and Enfield were out of sight as debutant Bobson Bawling, a former Football League player with Crawley Town, pulled the ball back for Charles to blast home.

Enfield’s attacking endeavour was proving too much for Cray to deal with, and the away side got a deserved fifth, albeit fortuitously, when Payne’s long-distance effort took a wicked deflection to wrong-foot the keeper.

The home side kept up their efforts and got what looked to just be a consolation when Tom Murphy’s effort deflected past McDonald.

They then made things slightly more nerve-wracking for the visitors when Jay Leader powered home a header from a corner.

It proved to be too little too late for Cray though, and Town held on to take all three points and preserve fourth place in the table.

Next up for the side is a home fixture in the Middlesex County Cup against Northwood, which kicks off at 7.45pm tomorrow night.
