Enfield Town’s FA Cup journey came to an end as they were defeated 1-0 by Chichester City in the third qualifying round on Saturday.

Lloyd Rowlatt scored the only goal in the final 10 minutes to send the step eight side through against step seven Town.

Injury problems had already mounted ahead of the game with the unavailability of Mo Faal and Billy Bricknell, and it got worse as Marc Weatherstone failed a late fitness test and Lewis Taaffe pulled up with a hamstring injury less than 10 minutes into the tie.

Nathan McDonald was the busier of the two keepers early on but Chichester failed to do anything that really troubled him.

Ken Charles fashioned Town’s first opening of the game but he was at too tight an angle to give Steven Mowthorpe anything to worry about.

The Chichester keeper was also alert to deny Charles at the start of the second half, and the hosts then almost took the lead, with Enfield relieved to see Jamie Horncastle’s strike bounce back off the post.

Sam Young came forward for Enfield in response, but he too was thwarted by Mowthorpe, who pushed his shot around the post.

Chichester skipper Connor Cody went on a mazy run forward in an attempt to win the game in the final 10 minutes but could eventually only flick into the arms of McDonald.

Finally, though, Enfield’s resistance was broken as a neat move down the right hand side ended with Rowlatt smashing a deflected effort past McDonald to seal their place in the fourth qualifying round, where they will travel to either Canvey Island or Bowers & Pitsea.

Town, meanwhile, see their midweek game at Kingstonian postponed due to the K’s needing an FA Cup replay, so their next match comes this Saturday in the Isthmian Premier Division away at Cray Wanderers.
